The Independence people get from Renewable and Efficient Energy means they do not have to rely on any utilities to live a comfortable life - living "off the Grid" without commercial power. There are actually entire communities that have no electric lines and no gas lines. These people brag about being able to see the stars at night and not the street lights.
About 180,000 homes, mostly in the west, operate off the grid, and the number of people going off the grid increases by about a third each year. |

Check out this major project - Nevada Solar One. It is the third largest solar power plant in the world, generating 64MW, as of June 2007, and is the second solar thermal power plant built in the United States in more than 16 years. It covers 300 acres and contain 760 mirror arrays, each measuring about 100 meters. The total number of mirrors is approximately 184,000. The mirrors direct sunlight on an oil-filled tube. The oil is then used to create steam, which turns a turbine. |

So what does all of this mean to you?
